M. Wu was awarded William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award for pioneering contributions in micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems. His achievement will be officially announced in the 2016 IEEE Photonics Conference in October 2016.

J. Lin received the best student paper award at the Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Conference on May 2016.

S.A. Fortuna received the Ross N. Tucker Memorial Award for his outstanding research in optical antenna nano-LED at the Electronics Materials Symposium in May 2016.

T.M. Swager received the 2016 Gustavus John Esselen Award for Chemistry in the Public Interest Chemical/Biological Sensing: Science and Real-World Applications.

F. Fischer was presented Carl-Duisburg Memorial Prize by the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) on March 2016 in Heidelberg, Germany.

E. Yablonovitch received the 2016 Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize for seminal achievements in solar cells and strained quantum well lasers, and especially for creating the field of photonic crystals in March 2016.

S. Salahuddin was selected to receive the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers, through the National Science Foundation in February 2016 and will be presented the award at a ceremony during Spring.


2015

J. Lin received first place for the 2015 Jin-Au Kong Doctoral Thesis Award for his outstanding Ph.D. thesis in Electrical Engineering, MIT in November 2015.

J.A. del Alamo received the Doctor Honoris Causa diploma from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid on November 30, 2015.

E. Yablonovitch received the 2015 Isaac Newton Medal, the highest accolade of United Kingdom’s Institute of Physics, for visionary and foundational contributions to photonic nanostructures in November 2015.

J. Lin, graduate student at MIT who is jointly advised by J. del Alamo and D. Antoniadis, was selected to receive the 2015 Dimitris N. Chorafas Foundation Award in September 2015.

B.O. Osoba, graduate student in the King Li group, UC Berkeley, was among the predoctoral scholars selected to receive an award from the Ford Foundation Fellowship Program, as announced by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in August 2015.

S.A. Fortuna, graduate student in the M. Wu group, UC Berkeley, received a First Prize for Student Posters awarded at the 2015 International Nano-Optoelectronics Workshop in August 2015.

I. Bhattacharya, graduate student in the Chang-Hasnain group, UC Berkeley, received a Second Prize for Student Posters awarded at the 2015 International Nano-Optoelectronics Workshop in August 2015.

E. Yablonovitch was designated an honorary professor by Nanjing University in July 2015.

J. Wu was recognized as Outstanding Alumnus by Peking University in summer 2015.

M. Eggleston, alumnus of the M. Wu group, UC Berkeley, was awarded the 2015 David J. Sakrison Memorial Prize for outstanding research in May 2015.

R. Going, alumnus of the M. Wu group, UC Berkeley, was awarded the 2015 Sevin Rosen Funds Award for Innovation for innovative technical achievement with potential for entrepreneurial success in May 2015.

C. Chang-Hasnain received a 2015 UNESCO Medal for the development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies at the UNESCO Headquarters in April 2015.

A. Javey received the 2015 Outstanding Young Investigator Award for innovative contributions in integrating nanomaterials into device applications at the Materials Research Society Spring Meeting in April 2015.

J. Lin, graduate student at MIT who is jointly advised by J. del Alamo and D. Antoniadis, received the National Award for Outstanding Self-financed Chinese Student Study Aboard in recognition of academic excellence, presented by the Consul General of the People's Republic of China at an award ceremony in April 2015.

B.O. Osoba, graduate student in the King Li group, UC Berkeley, was selected to receive a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, as announced by the National Science Foundation in March 2015.


2014

J. Lin, graduate student at MIT who is jointly advised by J. del Alamo and D. Antoniadis, received the Roger A. Haken Best Student Paper, presented at the 2014 International Electron Devices Meeting in December 2014.

T.-J. King Liu was presented the 2014 University Research Award by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) in recognition of her pioneering work that has helped advance the semiconductor industry in November 2014.

D. Antoniadis received the 2014 Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Aristotle Award at the annual SRC TECHCON conference on September 2014 for outstanding teaching and a deep commitment to the educational experience of his graduate students and his pioneering research in nanoscale solid-state electronic devices involving the application of new materials systems and structures to transistors for deeply scaled electronics.

C. Heidelberger, graduate student in the Fitzgerald group, MIT, received a IBM PhD Fellowship in September 2014.

S.A. Fortuna, graduate student in the M. Wu group, UC Berkeley, was chosen as a 2014 Best Student Paper Finalists by the IEEE Photonics Society for his paper, “Electrically Injected NanoLED with Enhanced Spontaneous Emission from a Cavity Backed Optical Slot Antenna”.

A. Javey was the winner of the 2014 Nano Letters Young Investigator Lectureship for which he gave the award lecture at the 248th ACS National Meeting & Exposition in San Francisco, CA in the ACS Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry (COLL) technical division programming.

C. Chang-Hasnain was presented the Quantum Device Award by the International Symposium on Compound Semiconductors for her pioneering contributions to vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) in May 2014.

J. Loo, alumni of the Center’s ETERN program, was awarded the 2014 James H. Eaton Memorial Scholarship by the EECS Department of UC Berkeley for being an EECS undergraduate student who has demonstrated a keen sense of creativity and inventiveness.

M. Eggleston, graduate student in the M. Wu group, UC Berkeley, was a joint recipient of the 2014 Ross N. Tucker Award, presented at the 42nd Metallurgical Society Northern California Electronics Materials Symposium in May 2014.

J. Loo, alumni of the Center’s ETERN program, was awarded a NSF Graduate Research Fellowship in April 2014.

E. Yablonovitch was awarded the Rank Prize in Optoelectronics from the Rank Prize Funds for his immense contributions toward research in optoelectronics, notably the widely-used concept that strained semiconductor lasers would have superior performance owing to reduced valence band (hole) effective mass, in February 2014.
